Class 2 Classroom

Miss. Hill teaches our Year 2 class. Miss. Hill is part of our Senior Leadership Team and she leads English and Science across our school. Year Two is a very busy classroom! The children enjoy learning lots of exciting things! Miss. Hill is supported during Literacy on Mondays and Wednesdays by Mrs. Dolan, who also teaches Year 2 PSHCE and handwriting on Monday afternoons. Miss. Dicken supports in Literacy on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and also teaches Year 2 P.E.

In Year 2, children enjoy learning following the 'FFT Spelling with the Jungle Club' and 'FFT Routes to Reading' schemes in their Literacy lessons, and in Maths they follow 'Maths - No Problem!', in line with the rest of the school. Year 2 children also enjoy lots of exciting topics throughout the year, including The Great Fire of London and Habitats.

 Homework

Spellings are given our every Monday in a home spelling book which your child can use to practise their spellings in. Your child’s spelling test will be every Friday. Please can your child bring their home spelling book back into school on a Friday, this book will be given out the following Monday with their new spellings.

The children will receive their topic homework on eschools. There will be different homework challenges linked to our topic and your child can choose one homework challenge to complete each week. Please send a picture or video of your child’s homework to me via eschools so we can share with the rest of the class!

The children will also receive a piece of Maths homework every Friday and have a week to complete this homework.

The children will also receive a log in for TT Rockstars where they can practise their times tables.

Children are expected to read on a daily basis (please see below)

Reading

Your child will read every day, either during their Literacy lesson or during dedicated reading time. They will sometimes read to their partner and sometimes independently. When an adult listens to your child read, this will be recorded in their reading record.

The school reading scheme is designed to enable children to develop reading for pleasure, and in Year Two they are responsible for choosing books independently. I will listen to your child read a book from the scheme every few weeks.

Our 'Routes to Reading' book (which we read in our Literacy lesson) is available as an eBook on our eSchools page. Please encourage your child to reread it at home to help develop their fluency and familiarity with the text.

Reading at home is very important in Year Two, and it is expected that children try to read at home on a daily basis. Even just a few pages every day will make a huge difference!  At home, the children are welcome to read their Routes to Reading book, a book from the school reading scheme or a book from home – anything that encourages them to develop a love of reading! Please record home reading in your child’s reading record.

I will check your child's reading record every day and reading at home will be rewarded with a jump on our 'Space Race'. When your child reaches number ten, they receive a sticker and choose a small prize as a reward for practising their reading.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks,

Miss. Hill
